Accessible kit for ‘Superhumans’ trialling at Horwich and Leverhulme centres

Groundbreaking fitness equipment featured on Channel 4’s The Superhumans Show has arrived at two Bolton leisure centres.

The Invictus Active Trainer is a treadmill for wheelchairs users, allowing them to improve their fitness, balance and technique. The specialised kit was showcased on the Channel 4 show presented by the Last Leg’s Alex Brooker, and is currently being trialled at Leverhulme Park and Horwich Leisure Centres.

The Active Trainer is the brainchild of two active wheelchair users, Paul Cooksey and Scott Smith. They noticed that most equipment for wheelchair users was not mobile, lightweight or even easy to find, so they developed this amazing bit of kit. It can be used in the gym as a standalone piece of equipment, or moved into an indoor cycling studio, giving wheelchair users the option of taking part in high energy, atmosphere-packed spin sessions.

Mahendra Patel, Deputy Partnership Manager for Bolton Community Leisure Trust said:

“The Invictus Active Trainer is a valuable addition to our two centres, and we’re hoping it’s going to be a real hit with the wheelchair users who exercise at our facilities.

“From reports I’m hearing, the Active Trainer provides a full-on workout, plus it’s great to see disabled and non-disabled people working out together in our spin studios!”

Stephen Hardman, a regular user of the facilities at Horwich said:

“I was so impressed with the Invictus and really enjoyed taking part in a spin session at Leverhulme Park Leisure Centre. Everyone needs to come down here and give it a try!”

Scott Smith co-founder of Invictus Active said:

"It's great to see more leisure centres providing accessible equipment to improve facilities for wheelchair users to get fit. We are excited to have our trainer within these two centres and look forward to more people having the opportunity to try the treadmill and get a cardio workout.

Using the Active Trainer can burn up to 700 calories an hour, and with its Bluetooth functionality, users will be able to record how many they’ve burnt during a session. Use of the equipment helps build shoulder strength and muscles, and can help towards improving general technique.

Working with its managing agent Serco Leisure, Bolton Community Leisure Trust operates five centres across the region: the Jason Kenny Centre, Farnworth, Leverhulme Park, Horwich and Westhoughton Leisure Centres.

To book a session to use the Invictus Active Trainer, just call the sites - Leverhulme: 01204 334 272, Horwich: 01204 334 488 or pop into the centres and talk to a member of the fitness team.

Real People, Real Lives

As part of our New Year, New You campaign, the team at Bolton Community Leisure Trust will be highlighting the hard work and dedication of some of our members, who have shared their own personal experience, motivation and journeys with us. We’re proud to have them as part of the family!

Joanne Partington – Leverhulme Park Member

Joanne joined Leverhulme Park Community Centre in December 2013 and began her fitness journey with us.

Joanne has done remarkably well in her training and has lost over 6 stone since November 2014.  Her commitment to the gym and training regime has stayed strong.

She initially began a training regime of her own whereby she lost weight through her own self-determination.   By doing so, she linked her diet closely to the training methods she was doing. Later on in March 2015, she conducted a programme with one of the Fitness Instructors at Leverhulme Park Leisure centre to further her development.

With a combination of resistance and cardiovascular training she was able to increase her metabolism and burn the fat that she sought to get rid of and tone up.

A massive well done to Joanne for all her hard work and the team at Leverhulme who have supported her through her journey to become who she is now and meet her goals.

Her journey has only just begun!

Bolton Community Leisure Trust supports Sport England’s ‘This Girl Can’ campaign

Sport England officially launched the inspiring ‘This Girl Can’ campaign last night (12 Jan) with the premiere of a national television advertisement during Coronation Street, reaching millions of viewers.  The initiative aims to forge new positive social attitudes to and around women and girls playing sport and being physically active, breaking down a key barrier (fear of judgement) so that they feel more confident and comfortable exercising.

Bolton Community Leisure Trust is supporting the initiative to encourage women and girls to take part in activities at our Centres and spread the message that ‘thisgirlcan’.  The Trust has seven leisure facilities across Bolton offering a variety of activities, including women only gym and swim sessions at Bolton One, Zumba, Legs, Bums & Tums and high energy Les Mills group exercise classes.  Other activities available such as squash, badminton and aqua aerobics offer an alternative workout option to the gym.

If an introduction to a particular sport or activity is needed, then Bolton Community Leisure’s friendly gym instructors are on hand to provide advice and support.  To see all of Bolton Community Leisure’s facilities and opportunities, visit www.boltonleisure.com.

Dave Singleton, Chairman of Bolton Community Leisure Trust commented “Sport England’s growing insight, especially into younger women, shows that many of the barriers encountered are emotional as well as practical – how they feel about sport is as important as finding a convenient, affordable option.  We are hopeful that the campaign will inspire women and girls within our local community and liberate them from fear of judgement to join us in our centres and get involved.”

There is a huge social media drive behind the Sport England campaign using the hashtag #ThisGirlCan to get women talking and sharing their thoughts and experiences.

Join us at Facebook at GymInBolton or on Twitter @gyminBolton where we will be supporting this inspiring campaign and showing you how to get involved at your local leisure centre.

Changes to free swimming for 60 – 64 year olds & free leisure activities for 65+ years

Customers will be aware that Bolton Council must make budget savings of £43.4million over the period 2013 – 2015. As a result it is not in a position to continue to fund the current range of free activities.  The Council has committed to maintain free swimming for the 17year olds and under and a full range of activities for 65 year olds and older, however, free swimming for 60 to 64 year olds will no longer be available from Monday, September 9th 2013 at Bolton Community Leisure Centres.

A charge will be payable from this date for these customers using the pool. This includes all instructor led aqua based sessions which will be subject to fees and charges.

These changes will be implemented across Bolton Community Leisure Centres from Monday 9th September.

Further changes outlined will mean that free leisure activities for those aged 65+ years, will only be available during off-peak hours from Monday 4th November at Bolton Community Leisure Centres.

A peak charge will be applicable before 9.30am Monday to Friday (excluding Bank Holidays) for all leisure activities across the centres.

Bolton Community Leisure Trust and Bolton Council are working closely to support this transition period and ensure that continued opportunities are available for customers through investment in new and improved facilities and activities.

The leisure centres affected by this policy change which are managed by Bolton Community Leisure Trust are:

• The Jason Kenny Centre at Bolton One
• Horwich Leisure Centre
• Farnworth Leisure Centre
• Westhoughton Community Leisure Centre
• Leverhulme Park Community Leisure Centre
• Sharples Community Leisure Centre
• Harper Green Community Leisure Centre
